Chorizo Picnic Skewers

These easy olive and cheese skewers combine two types of olive with smoky Chorizo Cheddar, folded chorizo, creamy mozzarella and fresh basil.

Inspired by the flavours of chorizo, our smoked cheddar is infused with garlic and coriander. Its smoky, savoury flavour works brilliantly with the cured meat, while mozzarella keeps each bite creamy. Basil adds freshness and the olives provide a salty finish.

Even better, our Chorizo Cheddar Truckle is September 2026’s Cheese of the Month, available at a special discounted price throughout the month. It is the perfect excuse to try it in this easy cheese skewer recipe.

Chorizo Cheddar skewers with olives, mozzarella, basil and sliced chorizo

Ingredients

  • 100g Chorizo Cheddar Truckle
  • 6 slices of ready-to-eat chorizo
  • 6 mini mozzarella balls
  • 6 black olives
  • 6 green olives
  • 6 fresh basil leaves
  • 6 short bamboo skewers

Method

  1. Remove the wax from the Chorizo Cheddar and cut the cheese into 12 similar-sized cubes.
  2. Drain the olives and mozzarella balls. Pat them dry with kitchen paper so they stay firmly on the skewers.
  3. Fold each chorizo slice into a loose ribbon. This makes it easier to thread and gives the skewers a fuller appearance.
  4. Thread a green olive onto each skewer, followed by folded chorizo, a cube of Chorizo Cheddar, a basil leaf, a mozzarella ball and a black olive.
  5. Add another cube of Chorizo Cheddar where there is enough room. Place the finished skewers in a sealed container and refrigerate until serving.

Have some Chorizo Cheddar left over? Use it to make our Cheesy Chorizo Toastie, packed with smoky cheese, crispy chorizo and a drizzle of honey.

Classic Vintage Picnic Skewers

Prefer something more traditional? These Classic Vintage Picnic Skewers combine strong cheddar with sweet fruit, salty prosciutto and sharp little gherkins.

Our Intense Vintage Cheddar Truckle has been aged for over three and a half years. Its deep, tangy flavour balances the sweet strawberries and grapes. Prosciutto adds a savoury note, while the gherkins bring a crisp, sharp finish.

  • Balsamic glaze
  • 6 short bamboo skewers

  6. Arrange the skewers on a serving board and add a light drizzle of balsamic glaze just before serving.

Make Them Your Way

These picnic skewer recipes are easy to adapt. You can swap green olives for stuffed olives, use red grapes instead of green ones or add an extra cube of cheese for a stronger bite.

Try to include cheese, meat and either fruit, pickles or olives on each skewer. The mixture of creamy, salty, sweet and sharp ingredients keeps every bite interesting.

Avoid cutting the cheese too small, as thin pieces can split when placed on the skewer. Cubes measuring around 2cm should hold their shape while still being easy to eat.

Packing Your Cheese Skewers for a Picnic

For the freshest result, assemble your cheese skewers on the morning of your picnic. Keep the balsamic glaze separate and add it shortly before serving.

Pack the skewers in a shallow, sealed container. If you need to stack them, place baking parchment between the layers to prevent them from sticking together.

Cheese, cured meat and mozzarella should remain chilled. Carry the container in a cool bag with ice packs and keep it closed until you are ready to eat. If serving the skewers to young children, remove the ingredients from the pointed sticks first.
