Make Garlic & Chive Cheese Twists with Our Cheese of the Month
Share
Golden, crisp and packed with savoury flavour, these Garlic and Chive Cheese Twists are the kind of snack that disappears almost as soon as it reaches the table.
They combine flaky puff pastry with our Garlic & Chive Cheddar Truckle, a bold cheddar cheese blended with punchy garlic and aromatic chives. The result tastes a little like cheesy garlic bread in crisp pastry form.
These Homemade Cheese Twists are quick enough for an afternoon snack but smart enough for parties, picnics and summer grazing boards.

- 1 tablespoon fresh chives, finely chopped, optional

How to Make Homemade Cheese Twists
1. Prepare the oven and tray
Preheat the oven to 200°C, 180°C fan or Gas Mark 6. Line a large baking tray with baking paper so the melted cheese does not stick.
2. Prepare the pastry
Unroll the puff pastry onto a lightly floured worktop. If the pastry is uneven, use a rolling pin to gently shape it into a neat rectangle.
Avoid pressing too firmly, as you want to keep those light pastry layers.

3. Add the garlic and chive cheese
Brush the pastry lightly with beaten egg. Scatter most of the grated garlic and chive cheese over one half, followed by the fresh chives and black pepper if using.
Fold the uncovered half over the cheese to create a pastry sandwich. Press gently with your hands, then lightly roll over the top to hold the filling in place.
Brush the top with more beaten egg and add the remaining grated cheese.
4. Cut and twist

Use a sharp knife or pizza cutter to divide the pastry into 12 even strips.
Hold both ends of each strip and twist them in opposite directions three or four times. Place each twist on the prepared baking sheet, leaving a little room between them.
Press the ends down gently to help the twists keep their shape.

5. Bake until golden
Bake for 12–15 minutes until the cheese twists are puffed, crisp and golden brown.
Leave them on the tray for five minutes before moving them to a serving board. Similar puff pastry cheese straws are commonly baked at this temperature for around 12–15 minutes.

How to serve…
Serve these twists warm with a creamy chive dip, chutney or your favourite savoury sauce. They also work well alongside tomato soup, salad or a cheeseboard.
For parties, arrange them in a jar or glass so guests can pick one up easily. They make a tasty alternative to traditional cheese straws and are ideal for picnics, buffets, lunchboxes or relaxed evenings with drinks.
They are at their crispest on the day they are baked. Once completely cool, keep any leftovers in an airtight container and warm them briefly in the oven before serving again.
The flavour behind these cheese twists…
Garlic, chives and cheddar are a classic savoury combination. The cheddar brings a rich, creamy flavour, while the garlic adds warmth and the chives provide a fresh, herby finish.
Our Garlic & Chive Cheddar Truckle is made in Lincolnshire and contains 98% cheddar cheese, with garlic and chives blended through it. Using a flavoured cheese also keeps this recipe simple. You get plenty of flavour without preparing a separate garlic butter or adding lots of extra seasoning.
