How to Create a Heart-Shaped Cheese Board
Share
Nothing says “I love you” quite like cheese. Especially when it’s arranged into a giant heart.
Whether you’re planning a Valentine’s Day date night, an anniversary treat or just fancy serving your favourite cheese in a slightly more romantic way, a heart-shaped cheese board is surprisingly easy to put together.
You don’t even need a heart-shaped board to make one. With a few delicious cheeses, plenty of crunchy bits and the right arrangement, you can turn an ordinary cheeseboard into something worthy of your favourite cheese lover.
Here’s how to create one.
What Do You Need for a Heart-Shaped Cheese Board?
Before you start arranging, gather everything you want to add to your board.
A good Valentine’s cheese board could include:
- 3–5 cheeses with different flavours and textures
- Crackers or cheese biscuits
- Chutney, pickle or chilli jam
- Grapes, strawberries or sliced fruit
- Pickled onions or other savoury snacks
- A few sweet treats if you fancy them
- Small bowls for chutneys and loose accompaniments
And, of course, something heart-shaped never hurts.
Our Munchie’s Mighty Mature Heart Cheddar is made just outside Skegness, matured for two and a half years and finished in bright pink wax, so it makes a pretty impressive centrepiece before you’ve even started arranging anything.
If your Valentine prefers their romance with a little more fire, Flamin’ Heart Cheddar brings chilli, peppers and jalapeño into the equation.
1. Start With Your Board
A heart-shaped slate or serving board makes this ridiculously easy. Fill it from the edges inwards and the shape does most of the work for you.
But don't have one? No problem.
You can create a heart shape on a normal round, square or rectangular cheeseboard too.
Start by imagining two rounded sections at the top of the heart, then gradually bring your ingredients together towards a point at the bottom. If you want a little guidance before the cheese comes out, lightly mark the shape using a piece of baking parchment as a template.
Once everything is filled in, nobody will be looking at the board underneath anyway.
They’ll be looking at the cheese.
2. Give the Cheese Centre Stage
Cheese should be the first thing you place on the board. It gives you a few larger “anchor” points that you can arrange everything else around.
For a Valentine’s Day cheeseboard, try mixing a few different flavours rather than filling the whole thing with similar cheeses.
For example:
Something classic: a strong mature cheddar
Something sweet: Caramelised Red Onion Cheddar
Something spicy: Flamin’ Heart Cheddar
Something a little different: one of your favourite flavoured British cheeses like hot maple cheddar or black garlic cheese.
And if you have a heart-shaped cheese, make the most of it.
Place it whole near the centre so the shape remains visible, then cut some of your other cheeses into wedges or chunks around it. You could even use one heart cheese as the centrepiece and cut the second into pieces ready for sharing.
Because fighting over cheese isn't particularly romantic.
3. Build the Heart Shape
Now start creating the outline.
Arrange cheese, crackers and fruit around your main cheeses, keeping the board roughly symmetrical so the two rounded sides of the heart stay visible.
A few simple tricks help:
- Fan crackers around the edges.
- Use bunches of grapes to create curved sections.
- Arrange slices or chunks of cheese in short rows.
- Bring the ingredients closer together as you reach the bottom point.
- Keep changing direction rather than creating lots of straight lines.
You don't need everything to look perfectly symmetrical. A cheeseboard should look generous and inviting, not like you've attacked it with a ruler.
4. Add the Crunchy Bits
Once the cheese is in place, it’s time for crackers, biscuits and other crunchy accompaniments.
Rather than putting one big pile of crackers in the corner, spread smaller groups around the board. This helps fill the heart shape and means nobody has to reach across the entire cheeseboard every time they want another cracker.
You can mix different shapes and textures too. Plain crackers are great when you want the cheese to do the talking, while peppered or flavoured cheese biscuits add another layer of flavour.
5. Add Chutney, Pickle and Other Accompaniments
A cheeseboard without a little something to dollop onto your cracker feels unfinished.
Place chutney or pickle in small bowls and tuck them between your cheeses. Smaller bowls are particularly handy on a heart-shaped cheese board because they help create different sections without losing the overall shape.
Our Punchy Pickle, for example, has a tangy, sweet and slightly spicy flavour and is designed to pair with cheddar and crackers.
Caramelised onion chutney, apple chutney or sweet chilli jam can work nicely too, depending on the cheeses you've chosen.
If you want to go further into which flavours work together, this is where I'd internally link to your Romantic Cheese Pairings for Valentine’s Day guide rather than turning this article into another pairing blog.
6. Bring in Some Valentine’s Colour
Now for the bit that makes your heart-shaped cheese board look properly impressive.
Add splashes of red, pink and deep purple between your cheeses and crackers.
Try:
- Strawberries
- Red grapes
- Raspberries
- Apple or pear slices
- Dried fruit
- Pickled onions
You can even cut the tops of strawberries into a small V shape to make them look more like hearts.
Don't go overboard trying to make every ingredient Valentine's themed. A few pops of colour around the cheese are enough to make the whole board feel special.
7. Fill Those Little Gaps
The difference between a slightly sad cheeseboard and one you immediately want to dive into is often just the gaps.
Once everything important is on the board, look for empty spaces and fill them with smaller ingredients.
A few grapes here. A biscuit there. Maybe a handful of savoury snacks.
Keep going until the board looks abundant while still allowing the heart shape to show.
And remember, there are no cheeseboard police. If your heart ends up slightly wonky, it still contains cheese. That's the important bit.
How to Make Your Valentine’s Cheese Board Extra Special
Want to take it one step further?
Add a few personal touches.
Choose your partner's favourite cheese rather than simply picking what looks prettiest. Add the chutney they always steal from your side of the board. Include a glass of their favourite drink. Or surprise them with a cheese they haven't tried before.
You can also build the board together as part of your Valentine’s evening.
It may not be quite as conventional as a candlelit three-course dinner, but we'd argue that picking your way through artisan cheese, crackers and chutney together sounds pretty romantic.
