How much cheese per person for a wedding?

Generally, caterers recommend around 75-110g of cheese per guest, assuming that cheese will be served as one part of a bigger spread, or as an accompaniment to the main meal.

Cheese is a fantastic addition to an evening buffet, as it can be beautifully presented as an impressive-looking platter. Plus, almost everyone will enjoy having a nibble throughout the early evening. It’ll be appreciated by your all-day guests too, as a delicious pick-me-up between your ceremony and your evening reception.

How many cheeses should you include?

As a general rule, aim for at least five different cheeses, and make them a good variety of textures and flavours. Remember that not all your guests will necessarily be especially adventurous when it comes to cheese, so be sure to include at least a couple of “safer”, more traditional varieties as well as any of your more unusual favourites.

(If you have a cheese subscription with us, you might already love our contemporary, show-stopping charcoal cheese, but your nan and your great uncle? They might prefer to stick to a nice vintage cheddar!)

Cheese board or cheesecake?

This decision really depends on the size of your wedding, the number of guests, and your own dedication to all things cheese.

If you work on the catering advice of 75-110g of cheese per person, that means that for 100 guests, you should be looking to serve around ten kilograms of cheese.

Wedding cheese board

However many people you're feeding, you can certainly make an impressive cheese board display, especially if you incorporate some large cheese wheels as well as some smaller truckles and barrels to add interest and variety.

You could dress things up further by adding crackers, fresh fruit and edible flowers. For a fun twist, you could even add some nuts and/or sweet treats to your display to complement the flavours you've chosen – the only limit is your imagination. Alternatively, you could prepare several smaller cheese boards and serve up one at each table so that everyone gets the chance to try a little bit of everything.

Wedding cheese cake

Wedding cheese cakes have become increasingly popular in recent years, and obviously, as cheese lovers, we heartily approve. Although a lot of couples do still opt for a more traditional style of tiered fruit cake with elaborate icing, they’re certainly not the foregone conclusion they once were. Many couples who do still want a traditional sweet cake are going for crowd-pleasing chocolate sponges, red velvet or even good old vanilla, rather than an old-school, densely packed fruitcake.

And of course, lots of other couples are ditching the batter altogether, and opting for a stunning artisanal cheese wedding cake instead. It’s not hard to see why. Our celebration cakes are beautiful towers of cheese that look incredible as they are, and have endless potential for decoration too. Flowers, either fresh edible varieties or colourful dried arrangements that complement the wedding décor are a popular choice. Personalised figurines can also be added, just as you would with a sweet cake or any other sort of embellishment that suits your theme. Whatever your style, you can certainly use a wedding cake of cheese to create a stunning centrepiece that’s just as photogenic as its traditional counterpart.

They’re just as flexible as traditional cakes too. Our smallest option weighs in at 2.4kg and is ideal to serve around 20-25 people. Our ultimate celebration cake is a towering show stopper, combining a 12 Inch Poacher Round, a whopping 2.5KG Blackstick Blue Cheese (with an attractive golden wrapper), five of our 200g truckles, five of our 145g barrels, one large 2kg truckle, all topped off with a very wedding-worthy heart-shaped truckle at the top of the tower. All of the cheeses can be customised with your own favourites and the whole cake weighs in at a massive 12.9kg – plenty to feed over a hundred guests! We also have a variety of options in between to suit any number of cheese-loving guests.

The hard part will be deciding which of our many kinds of cheese to include – we’d recommend treating yourself to one of our cheese hampers ahead of time to figure out your favourites.

Wedding Cheese Cake or Traditional wedding cake?

Some people might say you should choose one or the other. We say, it’s your wedding – do things your way! If you want to have a cheese cake as well as something sweet, why shouldn’t you? No doubt your guest will be doubly impressed, and you’ll be able to capture two sets of cutting the cake photos too!
